Europe covers approximately 10,180,000 square kilometres, which is about 2% of the Earth's surface and 6.8% of land area, making the continent the second smallest. Europe has a population of approximately 746 million, which equates to 10% of the entire world population. The continent is separated from Asia by the watershed of the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, the Greater Caucasus, the Black Sea and the waterways of the Turkish Straits. Despite majority of this border being over land, Europe is given the status of a full continent in its own right because of its size as well as the weight of its incredibly rich history and traditions that have had and continue to have a massive impact on the modern world.
